As most of you are aware, John Bieniewicz, a soccer official from Southeast Michigan, was tragically killed while officiating a Amateur Men’s soccer game last year.
In response to his attack, along with the hard work of many of our officiating family, the Michigan State Senate has proposed legislation (2015 MI-SB 0031 & 0032) that will change the penalty for assault on a sports official from a misdemeanor to a felony. The bill also includes Coaches and Assistant Coaches under the definition of “Sports Official.”
The proposal is currently under review of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
I’ve attached a link to a petition for support of the bill below. Please consider to take the time to sign this petition to support this bill as it moves through the legislative process.
Thank you! If you wish, please share this petition with other members of the officiating community.
